String Tinkers is the collective talents and efforts of George Brin, Anthony Foronda, and Don Spaeth, three musician-friends who live in Connecticut’s Quiet Corner. Anthony is a well-known Graphic Designer, Teacher, and Saxophone Player; Don is a Private Investor and Renowned Ukulele Player; George is a Celebrated Woodworker, Luthier, Designer and Guitarist. String Tinkers grew out of a desire to build quality cigar-box and tin-box stringed instruments for players and collectors. What makes String Tinkers special is the care and skill that goes into each instrument—whether a Cigar-Box guitar, a ‘Canjo’, a Ukulele or Strum Stick. Starting with the search for vintage Cigar and Tin Boxes, we design the neck and headstock to compliment our body selection. Next we select the appropriate pick up system—either piezo or magnetic—install the frets and tuning machines and, lastly, add the design flourishes that set us apart from other builders. Being in the Antique Capitol of Connecticut, Putnam, and a stone’s throw from Brimfield, MA., we are able to find the vintage components that make our instruments so popular with Collectors and Designers. Our Luthier Skills make each String Tinker instrument a pleasure to play and listen toEvery String Tinkers instrument is a hand-made, unique work of art. Each instrument can be played acoustically or electrically by plugging into an amplifier. All our designs are fully functional stringed instruments with accurate tuning machines and well-seated frets.Whenever possible String Tinkers uses Repurposed Materials in the construction and design of its Instrument Line.
