AMI Outfitters is located in the Sears-Roebuck Cottage at 505 Pine Avenue in the Historic Green Village at the north end of Anna Maria Island, near the City pier. The cottage is a circa-1935 catalog "kit home," totally restored and green-retrofitted. Outfitters' owner Steve Traves says, "In line with the Green Village concept, we're focusing on human-powered watersports (kayaks and stand-up paddleboards) and sustainable outdoor clothing made from specialty fabrics like bamboo and organic cotton. It's 'technical/performance' menswear for sun and insect protection, odor resistance, rapid drying and staying cool. We have shirts that actually get cold when wet." In addition to quality spin-fishing, fly-fishing and other Island-related outdoor equipment including top-of-the-line kayaks, AMI Outfitters offers Nordic-walking poles for fitness and stability on the beach, as well as on the trails at Robinson Preserve. Traves teaches free Nordic-walking lessons. From his background in cross-country skiing in the Sierra-Nevada foothills of California, he developed skill with Nordic-pole techniques to stay fit in the off-season. A California transplant, Traves set down roots on Anna Maria Island in 1986. His career in the Outdoor Retail Industry dates back to 1973 as a manager of a small start-up backpacking shop called Mountain People in Idyllwild, CA, which eventually grew into the worldwide Eagle Creek travel gear company. He took a 30-year detour as a pro outdoor and architectural photographer, and has now come back to retailing outdoor gear. The shop is dog-friendly, and carries collars, leashes, toys, and organic treats for canine companions. Also available are some fun products like men's and women's toe socks and barefoot shoes, along with unique items like portable solar panels to charge electronics on-the-go. Currently president of Kayak Anglers of West Florida, Traves also offers free kayak-angling instruction, along with photography workshops. AMI Outfitters is a hub for fly and spin fishing charters. Also, they provide charter bookings with guides who are fully-equipped for kayak-angling, or just eco-touring.
